Italy midfielder Daniele de Rossi has paid a glowing tribute to Steven Gerrard as the Azzurri stepped up their preparations for Sunday’s last eight clash with England.
De Rossi, who has been courted by a number of English clubs, including Manchester City, revealed Gerrard had been his footballing hero for many years.
“Steven Gerrard has always been my idol,” he said. “For the last 10 years, he has been amongst the best in the world.
“He is here, he is there. Attacking, defending. I would love to be able to play close to his level.
"He is the ultimate midfielder.”
